Project Overview
🔎 OBJECTIVES
Create an app that I could access offline, from my phone, that stored the essential information I needed for my trip, all in one place.

This was a personal project I pursued in order to feel prepared for my trip as well as get a more hands-on experience with AI’s current capabilities for app development from a non-technical user (me).
AI-assisted design and development
I had previously utilized Codex for a work project, but it was generating a prototype from Figma designs. I wanted to see if I could start from scratch and get a usable project, within a short timeline.
I created a source-of-truth document that the information was pulled from so AI wouldn’t hallucinate some important information like my airline confirmation code.
I outlined the key user actions and product requirements for the app.
I kept the prototype limited to CSS/Html so I could quickly get a feel for the visual design an UX. Once completed, I made it a private, offline-only app and downloaded on my phone.
Because I was on a deadline (as the trip would happen with or without the app made), I accepted a lot of “okay-for-now” design choices.
💭 Reflection
Industry Takeaways
I got frustrated with some dumb design decisions AI made, the inconsistency of when it applied changes, and wanted to give up once or twice. However, I was also delightfully surprised by some of the design choices and overall, completed a project I wouldn’t have been able to do own my own before.
Through this AI-first project, I learned a lot about how to set it up for success, how to best prompt to get the results you intended, and the current design limitations when using AI for product development.
Personal Takeaways
It was cool to see the designs generated and I did actually use the app frequently on my trip. I would happily iterate on it and use it again for my next trip.
